Today the kids have had a great time playing Dr Who. Shaun is Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor (and my favourite) Rori is the Eleventh Doctor, Tye of course is the monster of the week. The Tardis plays herself lol.
Today is the 50th Anniversary of the first showing of the first episode of Dr Who - since then there have been Eleven doctors. every generation has their favourite Doctor - which one is yours? I guess I grew up watching Tom Baker being larger than life in the role, and to me he's the perfect doctor, however when David Tennant came along he was also perfect as our travelling Timelord.

Admittedly it's slow progress but all the same here are eight pairs of tiny black shoes,,and 'something'
In the end the thought of making them all from scratch was too daunting so these are repainted copies of mattel shoes. With luck they'll fit and look ok. Right now they're still outside drying after a few coats of acrylic paint. A few of them need decoration before they're finished but for the most part the hard part is done..shoes wise anyway. As for the other 'thing'? Lol I'll leave you to wonder what that is! Here's today's project completed. A military style snare drum. It's part of the shoot I'm planning when I've finally made all the props I'm going to need for it. This is only a rough picture as I couldn't resist sharing the new item lol In the meantime here's how I made this little instrument. In the style of every 'Make It' book for kids circa 1966...we start with the humble cotton reel! Which got trimmed so it was about two thirds the original length. Then I cut some cardboard discs from an old cat food box. I glued one each end, let it dry and then coated the whole in white paint from an aerosol can. Then it was time to add colour. Burnt Umber for the main body and a mixture of yellow ochre and white for the skin and detail on the lower edge. I spent some time researching drums for my purpose on the internet (what did we do before it!!) I wanted the feel of a very old drum, one that had been played for many decades. I aged the 'skin' by dry brushing with burnt umber and then added some nail detail to the sides as decoration. I also added a black rim around the bottom edge. Next I drilled tiny holes in the top edge and added embroidery thread that I'd aged in a dye bath. I also added the black metal band around the top edge, and two loops of wire to hold the support strap. They are held on with leather glued in place. At this point it had got dark so I had to move indoors - hence the apalling light! The next stage proved very tricky :( I added the lower rope and started to work the tension strings around it and glue the ends to the underside of the top edge so it looked like the drum was laced. Ta Daa! The finished drum. I added the leather tensioners to the strings (badly but never mind) and made an adjustable strap so it can fit different dolls. I then painted the top black ring a bit wider so it didn't look like the skin was holed rather than the frame. I think it looks ok. The drumsticks are made from two shortened cocktail sausage sticks trimmed and sanded. Watch out for the new story where the drum will feature!! Thank you for reading :) Sue and Tye. |
